What’s new in canola technology?

Every year the top canola seed companies are coming out with new canola hybrids attempting to provide solutions to help make farmers more profitable. For 2023, we saw new characteristics like higher pod shatter reduction ratings and various trait stacking options, but there were a few stand-out new features that might be good to look at for the 2024 season, if you haven’t yet.

Clubroot Resistance

There has been a lot of genetic focus in the past few years on enhancing clubroot resistance. Now with up to 7 generations of clubroot resistance available and various new pathotypes identified, there are many different clubroot resistance options available to the farmers.

When looking for a hybrid with the highest level of protection against clubroot, look for resistance to new pathotypes, such as 5X, 3A, 3D, 3H, and 11A.

Optimum GLY

Optimum GLY is a new herbicide-tolerant canola trait from Corteva Agriscience that boasts improved crop safety, enhanced weed control, and a wider window of application, with excellent yield potential. The key to this new trait is it provides the ability to increase glyphosate rates and vastly widens the application window, which allows for the control of a broader spectrum of weeds than other glyphosate-tolerant canola systems.

There is currently one canola hybrid available with the Optimum GLY trait (Brevant seeds B4015) but look for more to come.

LibertyLink Nexera

Brevant seeds’ Nexera has a new hybrid canola out this season which has, for the first time, the LibertyLink trait. This is important for Nexera canola, as we know it’s important to be rotating not only our crops but our crop platforms as well. With the new LibertyLink Nexera canola hybrid, B3017N, Nexera growers can now add the LibertyLink trait to the rotation for added crop diversity.
