Selecting the Right Canola Hybrid

Canola has become the number one crop in Western Canada, which in turn has allowed for the research to create an array of hybrids to fit the needs across the country. So how do you know which hybrid is right for you?

At Sharpe’s, we try and take some of the guess work out of it for you by narrowing it down to the hybrids that are most suitable for our region given soil types, growing season, diseases, and weed issues. Based on these commonalities for our areas, we have canola seed hybrids narrowed down for you with a few exceptions.

Select the Trait

The trait you select for your field, be it LibertyLink, TruFlex, or Clearfield, could be determined by which herbicide solutions you want to use, what trait was planted and what herbicides were sprayed in the previous years, and possibly just what you like best. The most important aspect to consider out of all, though, is what has been used in previous years. Now more than ever it’s important to switch up your herbicides, which means ensuring you plant with the proper traits.

Better/Best

At Sharpe’s, each year we determine the Better/Best canola hybrids based on our top performers. By narrowing down the top performers in our area you can ignore the inundation of data from the seed companies and focus on real information that is specific to you. Use our Better/Best list to narrow down your options and from there, determine what you need in a disease package.

Disease Package

In canola hybrids you are looking for clubroot ratings and blackleg ratings, with the odd added benefit of sclerotinia protection, if you can find it. Based on your history with each of these diseases, determine what ratings are important to you. With up to 7 generations of clubroot pathogens available, selecting the right hybrid with the proper protection is crucial and possible.
